Biography
A life in design
Chantel Carter has spent more than two decades turning pages of script into places you can stand inside. Her work begins long before the first camera rolls — in research, drawings and the quiet accumulation of detail that gives a story its atmosphere.
Spanning feature films, television series and commercial productions, her practice moves fluidly between the epic and the intimate: from the vast fantasy domains of Blood Psalms to the snow-bound wilderness of Racheltjie de Beer and the sweeping forests of Fiela se Kind.
A collaborator at heart, Chantel leads teams of art directors, set decorators, construction crews and painters — building worlds that serve the director's vision while remaining grounded, authentic and alive.
Rooted in South Africa, she draws on the textures of the country — its landscapes, light and layered history — as raw material for a distinctly cinematic language. Her sets have travelled to international screens and festivals, earning recognition for their craft and specificity.
